(Sioux City, IA) Kayla Gesink is one of the premiere two sport athletes in Northwest Iowa. After two stellar seasons, the Junior Setter has been named All-State twice. Last season she was amongst the state leaders in assists with 8.6 assists per match as well as 1.9 digs per contest. On the hardwood Gesink leads the Wolfpack in virtually every statistical category. She currently averages 11.6 points per game and has handed out 68 assists and grabbed 54 steals.

If you had to choose one, Basketball or Volleyball? Why? That’s a really tough question. Hopefully in college I will be able to do both but if I had to pick one it would be volleyball. It comes a little easier for me and is more natural for me. Plus it’s not as hard on my body.

How is the college selection process going? It’s going pretty well. I’ve heard from a lot of the area private colleges (Dordt, Northwestern, etc.) and I think that is the direction I want to go. If another opportunity comes along I will definitely look at it as well. I want to have a decision made by the end of my senior volleyball season, so I’ve still got plenty of time.

Describe what it’s like to play volleyball at Western Christian? It’s a lot of fun. The competition level is so intense and we all have such high expectations. We work hard every day and expect to win every game. We are already focused on the state tournament next year. Expectations are very high.

What is the secret to volleyball success at Western Christian? For us it’s been the fact that we have played together since we were in 5th grade. We start at that age with our AAU team and we focus on skill development at a very young age. The younger girls look up to us so much, and when we got our chance at the varsity level we didn’t want to be the team that broke the winning tradition. Coaching plays a big part as well. Our Junior Varsity Coach Mr. Kooiman is one of the best coaches in the state. He worked with us at a very young age and got us all doing the same things. That really gives us an advantage.

What are your goals for next volleyball season? Obviously I want to win another state championship. We also aim to win every Saturday tournament, and also win another Lakes Conference Championship. For me I hope to be named All-State again and would really like to be named to the All-Elite Team.
