(Sioux City, IA) Briar Cliff soccer coach Pat Herbst has announced the signing of Dominic Wetzbarger, a soccer standout from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, in Sioux City.

Wetzbarger is a four-year letterwinner and starter on the soccer field for the Crusaders of Bishop Heelan High School. The center midfielder and two-time team captain has led the fifth-ranked Crusaders to a record of 10-3-1 this season. He leads the team with seven goals and also has a pair of assists. Last year, he tallied five goals and two assists as he helped the Crusaders reach the substate finals, where they lost to eventual state champion Spencer High School. For his efforts, he was named a first team all-Missouri River Activities Conference (MRAC) selection.

"We are excited to have Dom join the Briar Cliff soccer team," said Herbst. "He brings a great playing background, from both high school and club. He is a technical player who we believe could come in and have a good career at Briar Cliff." Wetzbarger has played club soccer for Gateway City and the Tri-State Revolution since 2002. Aside from soccer, Wetzbarger was a three-time cross country letterwinner and was named the team's MVP in 2009.

Wetzbarger is an honor roll and National Honor Society member. He is involved in student council and the Mayor's Youth Commission. The special mention athlete of the week by the Sioux City Journal has also earned numerous academic honors. He was named Heelan's Foreign Language Student of the Year and received the Leaders Award from the University of South Dakota. The son of David Wetzbarger and Frances Wetzbarger was also the recipient of the Cornelius and Mildred Duggan Scholarship and was a Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans 2010 Scholar. He plans to study sports science at Briar Cliff.
