(Sioux City, IA) How do you know if an official is a good official? Generally the most common answer is, if you didn’t know he/she was there then they did a good job. The best officials have the ability to manage the game and not interrupt the flow of the game or cause any undue incidents in the game. Generally speaking officials get a bad rap. For a meager sum of money they get to be verbally abused for several hours while their bodies take a pounding. In fact, once a Referee accidentally collided with a player, fell to the ground in agony with an injured knee. The following day the official met with the doctor and was told he would need to have surgery on the knee. Following the surgery he happened across the path of the player in which he had collided. They exchanged pleasantries at which point the player asked, “So are you alright? You don’t look so good; did you receive bad news from the Doctor?” At which point the official responded, “He did have some bad news, he said I can’t officiate...” The young athlete quickly responded by saying, “Oh, he must have seen you in action.”

Colton, the son of Melissa De Rocher and Jeff DeRocher, was born with a birth defect affecting his left hand. He’s used his right hand exclusively for the eight years of his young life. He and Abbot had a lot in common when they met and talked.
